When Si Pin Met Tony Pua

It was really a breath of fresh air when I met YB Tony Pua again on Thursday 24 April 2008 at the Asli-CPPS ‘Mid Term Review of the 9th Malaysia Plan’ being held at the Wawasan Open University, KL. The first time we met was at the Young Malaysians Round Table Discussion on National Unity.
One would never have saw him coming in if not for the Organiser, as he strolled in unassumingly, in simple slacks with a computer backpack round his shoulder. Tony was being invited as one of the panel of speakers to talk on the ‘Economic Competitiveness and Globalisation – Moving Up The Value Chain’.
Before the event started, I stole a moment to have a chat with Tony. Firstly, trying to introduce myself to him. I asked him if he ever remembered me. immediately he said, “of course, it was at the last CPPS event, right?” I told him I wouldn’t blame him if he couldn’t recognise me as even my wife found it hard to single me out from a crowd of people now. I told him since the General Election, I’ve been trying to grow back my hair!
We chatted a little and I find him such a ‘low’ profiled person (he has a high profile but he decided to keep it low) … So unlike the other MPs that I’ve met that come with a gush of ‘wind’. I also asked him if he still blogs as often as he used to. He replied in the positive.
I threw him another question and asked him if his life has changed ever since 8 March, and he replied “drastically!” I also told him that I am concern over him putting his whole family’s photo on his blog and if he ever thought about taking it down as security threats could be a potential problem in the future, as he is now not only an elected MP but also a multi-millionaire to those who follow his IT career since the early Cyber Village days. He said its never been a problem.
It wasn’t long before the Organiser was ushing us to move along as the event was about to start. As I make my way into the main hall, I can’t stop but wonder, what makes a person give up so much in order to come down to the level of the common folks and made a commitment to serve them as their MP. From a small town boy in Batu Pahat to a reknown IT giant in Singapore and Malaysia, no one in their right mind would have given up so much. If you don’t admire him, at least one should be awed with this man’s determination to do something for the people.
I took a mental note to reflect on my own ’intentions’ about serving the rakyat. I also wonder why so many others have also one time or another dream of becoming a YB!

Penang monorail yet to be approved by the Fed Govt, 2nd bridge to be delayed…any motive behind?
MU just lost to Chelse due to the controversial 2nd goal, my heart sinks but remain positive. Yes in life I’ve seen people of all kinds, at the end of the day it is that self-belief and ambition one should strive to become what he or she wants. Life wld be meaningless if we do not have the courage to take risk and strive for what we want. Perhaps Tony realised that being on the ground and help others can results a great sense of personal satisfaction. So it is that feeling of satisfaction and compassion. My good friend Ed Bon, a HR activist never believe in marriage of which I always rebuke him for that…nonetheless till today he maintain his conviction in order to pursue what he wants in life. I do not want to leave this world one day with many regrets but impact on people’s life. How or what I plan to do is still a long journey, as for now so far each day is a new beginning for sth to learn, contribute and make a different in others life…at the end of the day, I’ll say amen and doze well. Except for some personal hiccups, life is starting to be full of colours and challenges. One will never enjoy life if he is trying to be good all the times. I enjoy it.

Unless you are in the ICT industry long enough, the following are facts:
2008, under SG 0.05 per share, huge loss and lots of legal suit going on for CV.
1) CV as a website development house tried Mesdaq listing ans was turned down in the early days of 2001.

2) Later went down to Sesdaq and reposition as e-business consulting company
3) Listing attracted the smallest capital in Singapore then, of which a portion goes into listing exercise and was a talking subject among fund managers.

4) Acquired several companies with the limited funds.
5) CV has many clienteles and many from large organisation but questionable profitability
6) Not so much as an IT giant (as highlighted by SiPin) as it has been swallowed by large IT giants in Singapore; Datacraft, SCS, NTI, MediaRing, Ntegrator, Powermatic etc etc.
7) Been making losses since it’s IPO.
In summary, it’s a complete failure in many aspects of TP leading a company into IPO and successive years of losses with amounting potential liabilities from lawsuits.
Without prejudice, the facts and opinions on CV are non-bias and I do not know TP in person nor have business dealing with CV, or hold any grudges, hate or anything against TP or CV.
The CV experiences and sagas would have further sharpen TP to further lead in politics.
